Faced with significant challenges in 2009, CMO’s (chief marketing officer’s) all over the world need to rethink their marketing approach.
In February we are releasing the report CMO Trends 2009 based on the CMO Trends survey conducting in November and December 2008. But before we do, we are presenting a summary of the survey at a web-seminar. The web-seminar will provide tangible input to how marketers can effectively increase the Return on Marketing Investment in 2009 and beyond.
42 people signed up to participate in the first Marketing Through Social Networks webinar organized by FEDMA and yours truly - Michael Leander.
Below you can review the evaluation, the testimonials and critique of the webseminar.
Stressed for time, I will self-evaluate my own effort in more depth later, but for now I have these comments;
- 50% did not show up. Only 3 cancelled pre-event. That is 17 adults whom I am sure all had a good reason not to join, but still…. As a presenter volunteering time and money, I am quite frustrated about this. It’s similar to cooking for a party of 12 and only 5 show up.
- As a result, we are going to start asking payments for these web-seminars vsooner than planned.
- Good thing, though, is that the 21 people that did show up, were a great, interactive group of knowledgeable people whom I hope will join us for more web-seminars
- While the kind-hearted attendees did reward me with a relatively good rating, I felt I didn’t do well at all. In fact if it weren’t for a couple of quite motivating emails directly following the event, I would have been kicking boxes around for hours that afternoon.
- My presentation was too loaded with content without a proper structure and clear direction. So it’s really my own fault, I could have started the presentation earlier, given it more time to zink, run it not 2-3 times, but 5-6 times to get it as good as possible.
- And then there is the ever existing challenge of participants with very different backgrounds, experience and seniority on the subject. We will have to see what we can do about that in the future.
- Not being a quitter, I will of course do my darnest to improve for the next Marketing Through Social Networking web-seminar.
- I am thrilled about the many relevant comments and the critique providing me with some concrete areas to improve for next time.
After I have listened to the recording, I may add more self-criticism here.

This is a selfevaluation by me - Michael Leander - relating to my performance at the recent web-seminar “Email Marketing: Improving results through effective profiling and segmentation”. It will reveal my thoughts about the web-seminar and share with you the feedback given by the attendees.
Over at my Danish blog - www.michaelleander.com - I have started reviewing, criticizing myself. It is very private indeed. But so many other private thoughts and recollections are shared on the internet these days. So why wouldn’t I risk the chance of being ridiculed by publishing these thoughts for you and everyone else to see.
Below you can read how the attendees evaluated the web-seminar. You can also read their recommendations. It is quite interesting - to me at least.
To sum it all up, the overall value for the participants scored a 6 out of 7, where 7 is the highest possible score. And quite a few people indicated that they liked the actual web-seminar, and many that they see great value in the web-seminar format (you know, not having to leave the home or the office, avoiding traffic, less chance of being late for the next meeting, the cost aspect, the convenience aspect etc.).
My own reflections
It was the second time I delivered this presentation in a web-seminar. And I am going to be giving the same presentation (with a few improvements, of course) again 8 to 10 times before the end of 2009. So I should be able to get it 100% right sooner or later :- )
To summarize my self-criticism;
_ I need to work on my slow/fast, deep/soft speaking techniques, pausing and more interaction with - what is usually - a wonderful group of people participating. (most of the time quite willing to interact but also quite capable of providing valuable input and suggestions to the marketing topic addressed in the presentation)
- I get too stressed during the event. Probably because of lack of feedback (you know, speaking to a group of people in a web-seminar is very different than speaking in a room full of people).
- I must work on my English. I am using too many words such as “ehh”, “arh” and have a bad tendency to use sentences such as “obviously ….” or “and so on and so on” or “needless to say”, “actually” - it’s awful. What might be obvious to me, isn’t necessarily obvious to anyone else.
- My tendency to speak too fast near the end of a web-seminar is a show-stopper.
- Tooooo much content; I need to cut at least 10 minutes off
- Get 5 hours of sleep and don’t change the slides in the last minute
- And ensure that I use the correct presentation from start to finish (ooops), well at least I found out that I wasn’t using the most current presentation
- Beware of “auto-pilot”
Judging by the participants score, the content was not on par with the apparent experience of speaking skills. So for the next web-seminar, I need to work hard to increase the value and the structure of the content. Or perhaps it might be an idea to skip a few areas and then go deeper into certain areas such as the actual hands-on profiling techniques, how to identify weak profiles or other areas. I will need to consider that.
Many people refer to them as webinars, others as web-seminars, online seminars, web-meetings and so on. But no matter what you call it, seminars taking place on a website is a highly effective way to meet.
In the past months, Meemoo2 Marketingboss, FEDMA and Fokus Integrated have hosted a number of web-seminars about topics such as email marketing, loyalty marketing, customer retention, data quality, cross border marketing and more.
The slide-share show above shows the attendees evaluation of one of these webseminars, namely “Email profiling and segmentation for success”. You will see that the attendees rated the webinar quite high.
In 2009 we plan to offer readers of this blog, members of FEDMA and the Marketingboss Community at Xing to attend more than 20 different webinars. The majority will be held in the English language, but we are currently planning webinars in German, French and Spanish as well.
Upcoming web-seminars
January 2009
Email marketing profiling and segmentation for success
Mobile Marketing Trends 2009
February 2009
CMO Trends 2009, part 1
Marketers from 11 countries signed up to participate in the first Email Marketing Profiling and Segmentation web-seminar held in cooperation with FEDMA (Federation of European and Interactive Direct Marketing).
Since this was my first time to speak about email marketing profiling in a web-seminar format, I was quite unsure how the presentation, the format and the time allocated would be received by the participants.
You can see the evaluation in the slide-show below
As you can see the “average” participants were quite pleased with the webinar. I am still blushing from the stunning evaluation of my speaking skills. 6,31 on a scale from 1 to 7 where 7 is high. While I felt that there were lots of room for improvement, I was quite pleased with the content evaluation. 6,0 is quite good.
We still have some ways to go on other areas of the web-seminar, including the technical platform. But we will continually strive to improve to serve our participants the best possible way we can.

I found these three excellent marketing education opportunities. I realize that many will claim that their company currently is facing some tough times and therefore are reluctant to put emphasis on your continued marketing education. Read on for more.
Well, in my opinion, you should focus on obtaining new knowledge, get inspiration from people in the know and flat out look for better, cheaper and more effective ways to market your product.
Having been lucky enough to speak at many marketing conferences and marketing seminars in more than 15 countries, I have often been excited about the feedback conference participants have provided only weeks after attending.
It turns out, that often attendees are able to put the knowledge they acquire at a conference or seminar to good use immediately following the event. In other words, time and money spend are often payed back many times over within weeks after attending.
Here are the three excellent marketing education opportunities I mentioned:
1. EADIM - The European Academy of Direct & Interactive Marketing - A certificate rewarding program founded by Drayton Bird in association with FEDMA
Established by the world renowned direct marketing guru, Drayton Bird, EADIM was founded in 2008. The EADIM certificate was granted official recognition after a formal review in Brussels in 2008 by The PEACC Committee of the Federation of European Direct and Interactive Marketing Associations (FEDMA).
Now EADIM is ready to bid the next group of marketing students ready to join their 2009 course. The inaugural course had students from all over the world attending. And they were ecstatic about what they have experienced so far.
This is an excellent one year on/off campus programme designed to help you excel in direct and interactive marketing. Faculty includes a handful of the worlds foremost thinkers and practitioners. Go learn more.
And there’s more: It is increcible cheap. No. Really it is. You get one year of quality training for the value of two conference days. And. You can save £ 400 if you book your place before January 15th. 2009.
2.The International Senior Management Programme in Direct, Interactive & Relationship Marketing, June 2009 in Madrid in association with DMA, ICEMD and FEDMA
